Bukan rahasia lagi kan, kalau cewek sama cowok tuh banyak bedanya, bahkan dalam hal-hal kecil sekalipun. Contohnya aja nih, dalam hal berbicara dan menggunakan kata-kata. Berikut ini adalah artikel yang aku tulis setelah membaca sebuah hasil research yang dilakukan oleh seorang ahli bahasa, Deborah Tannen.

Deborah Tannen’s research on the use of language between male and female showed that people in different gender use language in different ways. According to Tannen, the women tend to use the language of rapport-talk, which is represents their desires to have a good relationship with the interlocutor. In contrast, men tend to use the language of report-talk that represents their goals to be the center of attention. Consequently, men and women often have problems when they try to talk to each other.

Personally, I agree with Tannen. In my daily life I found that people in different gender talk in different ways. My father and my mother don’t talk in the same way. My father prefers to say: “Let’s buy a new television” rather than “What you think if we buy a new television?” In contrast, my mother prefers to speak indirectly. She prefers to say: “This television was bought when you were 5, that’s why it is looks so oldies” instead of “Let’s buy a new television, this one is too oldies”.

In my opinion, this type of language use is influenced by the position, the role people play in their settings. In most society, father is seen as the one who has the highest position among the other family members. Consequently, father tends to speak in the way that shows his existing. However, when a man has the lower position than a woman, he will talk in the woman way -rapport talk- and vice versa. I found this in my experience with my younger brother. This opinion is along with the Faye Crosby and Linda Niquist discovering who conducted a research on the same topic.
